GCP vs AWS for Malaysian Startups: An Honest Comparison

Full Disclosure

We primarily use Google Cloud Platform (GCP) for our projects. So take this comparison with that context in mind. We'll try to be as fair as possible, but we clearly have a preference.

Pricing for Malaysian Startups

Both AWS and GCP offer free tiers that are generous enough to run a small app for months without paying anything.

GCP advantages:
  • Sustained use discounts happen automatically (no commitment needed)
  • Firebase is incredibly generous for small apps
  • $300 free credits for new accounts

  • AWS advantages:
  • More granular pricing options for specific use cases
  • Spot instances can be very cheap for batch processing
  • Wider range of instance types

  • **The honest take:** For most Malaysian startups, the cost difference is negligible. You're probably spending less than RM 500/month on cloud until you hit serious scale.

    Ease of Use

**GCP:** Cleaner interface, less overwhelming. Firebase makes it dead simple to deploy a web or mobile app. BigQuery is fantastic for analytics.

**AWS:** More powerful but more complex. The console has hundreds of services and it's easy to get lost. The learning curve is steeper but the ceiling is higher.

**For startups:** GCP is easier to get started with. AWS is more flexible when you need very specific infrastructure.

    Regional Availability

Both have data centers in Singapore, which gives you good latency for Malaysian users. Neither has a data center in Malaysia itself (yet).

    **GCP Singapore:** asia-southeast1

    **AWS Singapore:** ap-southeast-1

Both offer similar performance for Malaysian users. The practical difference is minimal.

    Talent Pool

This matters more than you'd think. In Malaysia:

**AWS:** Larger talent pool. More developers know AWS. Easier to hire.

**GCP:** Smaller but growing community. Harder to find specialists, but the ones you find tend to be very good.

    Our Recommendation

    Choose GCP if:
  • You're building a web or mobile app (Firebase is excellent)
  • You need good analytics (BigQuery)
  • You prefer simplicity over infinite options
  • You're already using Google Workspace

  • Choose AWS if:
  • You need very specific infrastructure (bare metal, specialized compute)
  • Your team already knows AWS
  • You're in an industry where AWS has specific compliance certifications you need
  • You need the widest possible range of managed services

  • Choose either if:
  • You're just starting out and need basic hosting, database, and storage
  • Your monthly cloud spend is under RM 2,000

  • The Real Answer

For 90% of Malaysian startups, either platform will serve you well. Pick the one your team knows best, or the one that feels more intuitive. You can always migrate later (it's not as hard as people make it sound, though it does take effort).

Don't let cloud choice paralyze you. Ship your product first, optimize infrastructure later.
